Bandarlampung (ANTARA) \u2014 Catur Endah Prasetiani P, Director General\nof Social Forestry at the Ministry of Forestry, has said that developing\ncommodity clusters within social forestry provides support for the\nproduct downstreaming programme.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is synergy or collaboration between district governments and\nsocial forestry business groups (KUPS). Then there is integrated area\ndevelopment, which can also produce commodity clustering that will\nincrease the economic scale of social forestry commodities,\u201d she said in\nBandarlampung on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
She said that nationally there are 160 social forestry products, and\nthrough cooperation with various parties, several commodities have been\ndownstreamed, both from plantations and from multi-business forestry\nusing agroforestry systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo after being overlaid with the national social forestry programme,\nthere are 10 commodities ready for downstreaming, including coffee,\nchocolate, candlenut, charcoal, coconut, cashew, pepper, nutmeg and\nclove. However, the main problem is that, for example, in Pesawaran\nRegency there are candlenut shell briquette products, but the market\ndemands greater production and the farmers are struggling. So this\nrequires collaboration by forming commodity clusters,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She continued that the formation of these commodity clusters helps\nsocial forestry business groups meet considerable market demand.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf clusters are formed, it will make it easier to reach market\ndemand, because markets always require certainty in quality, quantity,\ncontinuity, local wisdom and sustainability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She explained that commodity development for downstreaming will use\nan agroforestry scheme.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe market for these downstreamed products is expected to reach\nexport, starting with the domestic market first and then exports.\nFarmers usually process nutmeg oil or the first processed raw product of\ncommodities, and they usually cooperate with industry so that it finally\nbecomes a product entering retail,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
According to her, if social forestry products have difficulty finding\na market or offtaker, they will be assisted by her directorate or by the\nEnvironmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH).<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the moment, all parties must ensure that farmers can sell their\nproducts, and through this integrated area development there will be\ninnovation so that farmers do not only sell raw goods. This can increase\nfarmers\u2019 incomes, and BPDLH has even prepared several scenarios\nupstream, from planting to harvest, so that these social forestry\nproducts can be accepted by offtakers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
There are currently 10 social forestry commodities being developed\nfor downstreaming to support forest conservation and village\ndevelopment: coffee, cocoa, nutmeg, pepper, candlenut, clove, cashew,\ncoconut and vanilla.<\/p>\n
