        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki has\ndeclared the Ministry of Forestry\u2019s readiness to provide land within\nforest areas if needed as part of post-disaster recovery efforts in\nSumatra.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, Deputy\nMinister Rohmat Marzuki said the Ministry of Forestry has two principal\ntasks within the Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster\nRehabilitation and Reconstruction in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West\nSumatra: timber clearance and facilitating land provision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ministry of Forestry has declared its readiness to facilitate\nthe provision of land within forest areas if needed and proposed by the\nNational Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) or local governments. For\ntemporary housing, the mechanism used is approval for the use of forest\nareas. Meanwhile, for permanent housing, the mechanism involves the\nrelease of forest areas in accordance with prevailing laws and\nregulations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>During a task force meeting held on Monday (23 February), the Deputy\nMinister said that no proposals for forest area locations for the\nconstruction of temporary or permanent housing had been received to\ndate.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Forestry has received a letter from the Minister of\nPublic Works regarding a request to use forest areas for timber\nstockpiling, the construction of sabo dams, raw water provision, as well\nas road and bridge works traversing forest areas.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that these proposals would be processed promptly in\naccordance with regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding timber clearance, the Ministry of Forestry has issued a\npolicy on the utilisation of driftwood to support post-disaster recovery\nand has established a Team for the Acceleration of Flood-Carried Timber\nClearance in the three affected provinces. The team involves local\ngovernments, Ministry of Forestry regional technical units, as well as\nelements of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National\nPolice.<\/p>\n<p>One example of accelerated clearance was carried out along eight\nkilometres of Padang Beach in West Sumatra. Clearance operations were\nalso conducted along the Garoga watershed in North Sumatra, at the Darul\nMukhlisin Islamic Boarding School in Aceh Tamiang, and in Langkahan\nDistrict, North Aceh Regency.<\/p>\n<p>In Langkahan, approximately one million cubic metres of timber debris\nspread across roughly 36 hectares at five locations has been\naddressed.<\/p>\n<p>In Geudembak Village, Langkahan District, the Ministry of Forestry\nhas provided timber for the construction of temporary housing in\ncollaboration with Rumah Zakat and Gadjah Mada University on\nconstruction engineering aspects. A total of 103 temporary housing units\nare planned for construction. To date, 66 units have been completed and\n37 units are under construction.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the handling of timber accumulation at the Krueng Keuruto\nDam in North Aceh Regency, the Ministry of Forestry is in principle\nready to provide administrative support to ensure legal certainty for\ntimber stockpiling sites originating from the disaster.<\/p>",
