        "content": "<p>The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) has designated West Kalimantan\n(Kalbar) as a pilot area for developing a forest and land fire\n(karhutla) risk map for peat ecosystems, in an effort to strengthen\nscience-based prevention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk map is being prepared by the ministry\u2019s Forest Fire Control\nDirectorate together with the National Research and Innovation Agency\n(BRIN) and the Nature Conservancy Indonesia Foundation (YKAN), using new\nmodelling adapted to the characteristics of peat ecosystems and specific\nlocal conditions,\u201d said Israr Albrar, Senior Adviser for International\nCooperation in Forest Fire Control at the ministry, in a statement in\nPontianak on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Albrar said the development of the updated risk mapping method began\nin 2025 in order to produce more accurate mapping compared with previous\napproaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe method for preparing karhutla risk maps actually already exists,\nbut we are now refining it so that it can provide a more accurate\npicture of risk. West Kalimantan is the pilot location for applying this\nnew method,\u201d said Israr on the sidelines of a focus group discussion on\npreparing the peatland fire risk map for West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>Asep Hidayat, head of BRIN\u2019s Ecology Research Centre, said the map is\nbeing prepared in stages and collaboratively, combining biophysical\nvulnerability factors with anthropogenic aspects that influence the\npotential for fires in a given area.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the process includes developing the modelling\nframework, establishing indicators, and refining spatial analysis, so as\nto produce a map that better represents conditions on the ground and can\nserve as a scientific basis for karhutla control policy-making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinistry data shows that as of June 2026, the burned area in West\nKalimantan reached 28,680 hectares, or around 27 per cent of the total\nnational burned area. Meanwhile, the West Kalimantan Disaster Management\nAgency (BPBD) has mapped 335 villages prone to forest and land fires\nspread across 14 regencies and cities,\u201d said Nisa.<\/p>\n<p>He said Ketapang, Mempawah and Kubu Raya are priority areas, as they\naccount for around 77 per cent of the burned area in West Kalimantan\nduring the January-June 2026 period, based on ministry monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>Nisa added that the preparation of the risk map has now entered the\nstage of finalising the modelling and reviewing parameters, before being\ncompiled into a policy brief as input for the ministry in refining\nguidelines for designating karhutla risk areas, particularly in peatland\nlandscapes.<\/p>",
