Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Agency for Language Development and\nImprovement (Badan Bahasa) of the Ministry of Basic Education and\nCulture (Kemendikdasmen) has launched the \u201cDictionary in Schools\u201d\nprogramme, in the form of a digital Makassar-Indonesian-English\ndictionary, as an effort to protect and revitalise regional languages\nthrough the use of digital technology, in order to reach young\npeople.<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people are the focus this time because they are the generation\nthat has the strongest means of expression with all the ease of\ninformation technology that they master. The aim of involving young\npeople is to ensure that the mother tongue does not become foreign to\ntheir daily lives,\u201d said Minister of Basic Education and Culture\n(Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu\u2019ti in a written statement in Jakarta on\nThursday.<\/p>\n
The Head of the Agency for Language Development and Improvement of\nthe Ministry of Basic Education and Culture (Kemendikdasmen), Hafidz\nMuksin, added that the mother tongue has a crucial role in shaping\nnational identity.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy 2025, the Badan Bahasa will have revitalised 120 languages\nthroughout Indonesia and compiled 228 regional dictionaries as an effort\nto protect cultural identity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Unlike conventional dictionaries, this application is designed as a\n\u201cliving dictionary\u201d that allows the public to participate in suggesting\nnew vocabulary. Each suggestion, he said, will be verified by a team of\nexperts from the Badan Bahasa before being officially added.<\/p>\n
To attract students, the dictionary is equipped with various modern\nfeatures, ranging from translations that include Makassar, Indonesian,\nand English, to multimedia support in the form of pronunciation videos\nto help users understand the pronunciation and context of the words\naccurately.<\/p>\n
In addition, interactive quizzes are also included as an innovative\nand fun learning medium for students.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion, the Mayor of Makassar, Munafri Arifuddin,\nemphasised that this dictionary is a vital tool to strengthen local\nidentity in the era of globalisation.<\/p>\n
Full support also comes from the Makassar City Education Office,\nwhich will soon socialise the use of this application in all educational\nunits.<\/p>\n
