        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Culture emphasises that film plays\na strategic role not only as an industry but also as a medium for\ncultural expression and an instrument of national diplomacy amid\nincreasingly dynamic changes in the media landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of the Directorate General for the Development,\nUtilisation, and Nurturing of Culture at the Ministry of Culture, Judi\nWahjudin, S.S., M.Hum., stated that film is an important component in\nadvancing culture while also serving as a means to build national\nidentity during an online discussion on the Draft Law (RUU) on\nFilmmaking: Searching for the Form of Indonesian Film Institutions by\nthe Indonesian Film Board (BPI) held on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we know, film is not merely an industry but also a medium of\ncultural expression and an instrument of cultural diplomacy as well as\npart of advancing national culture, thus holding a very important\nposition for the advancement and nation-building of Indonesia,\u201d said\nJudi.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 20th century, film in Indonesia was dominated by\nimported productions and colonial documentation. Local production began\nto develop in the 1920s, which continued into the independence era with\nthe emergence of national filmmakers\u2019 works.<\/p>\n<p>Entering subsequent periods, Indonesian filmmaking underwent changes\nin line with policy dynamics and industry developments, including the\nestablishment of various film institutions as well as the organisation\nof film festivals as spaces for appreciation and distribution of\nworks.<\/p>\n<p>According to Judi, the most significant change occurred in the\ndigital era, particularly since the arrival of streaming platforms that\nhave broadly altered film distribution and consumption patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the digital era, streaming platforms emerged since 2016,\nradically changing the film distribution landscape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He assessed that this development demonstrates that film has complex\ndimensions, encompassing economic, social, and cultural aspects, thus\nrequiring an adaptive policy approach.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, film is also seen as having potential as a means of\ncultural diplomacy that can introduce Indonesia\u2019s values, identity, and\ndiversity to the global level.<\/p>",
