Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital\n(Kemkomdigi) is preparing vocational high school (SMK) students to\nbecome local digital talents capable of building, maintaining, and\nrepairing telecommunications networks in their respective regions.<\/p>\n
One such effort involves conducting fibre optic network training for\nSMK students in Medan. This training is part of the government\u2019s\nstrategy to expand internet access while simultaneously creating new job\nopportunities for the younger generation in regional areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cMoving forward, our concept is that fibre optic networks in various\nregions will no longer need to rely on workers sent from Java or other\nregions,\u201d said the Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid,\nduring the Fibre Optic Network Training for students at SMK Multi Karya,\nMedan, North Sumatra, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Meutya added that the availability of local digital talent has the\npotential to create new employment opportunities in the regions.\nAccording to her, the demand for skilled labour in the digital\ninfrastructure sector will continue to rise alongside the public\u2019s\nincreasing dependence on the internet.<\/p>\n
She presented data showing that, on average, Indonesians use the\ninternet for eight hours per day. Of the approximately 230 million\ninternet users in Indonesia, about 60 to 70 per cent belong to the youth\ndemographic.<\/p>\n
\u201cYoung people are the primary users of this technology. Therefore, we\nhope they do not merely become technology users, but also become the\nparties responsible for maintaining the infrastructure that supports\nsuch connectivity,\u201d she emphasised.<\/p>\n
According to Meutting, the government is committed to expanding\nconnectivity to reach areas that still face limited internet access.\nConsequently, as the network expands, so does the need for skilled\nworkers capable of installing, repairing, and maintaining\ntelecommunications infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cNetworks always require attention. Once they have been in use for a\nsignificant period, they inevitably require human intervention, repairs,\nand regular maintenance,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n
The fibre optic network training programme for SMK students is part\nof the strategy by the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure\n(DJID) of Kemkomdigi to support the national fixed broadband\ninfrastructure development target.<\/p>\n
The government aims for fixed broadband service penetration to reach\n50 per cent of the Indonesian population during the 2025\u20132029 period.\nCurrently, penetration levels are at approximately 25 per cent of the\npopulation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe deployment of digital infrastructure is not just about devices\nand cables, but also about human resources. Therefore, we see training\nsuch as this as essential to prepare skilled workers who can later\nsupport the development and maintenance of networks in their respective\nregions,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
According to Wayan, the current development of telecommunications\ntechnology has entered an era dominated by fibre optics, which opens up\nnew business and employment opportunities across various regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis creates business and entrepreneurial opportunities to act as\npartners for the thousands of telecommunications providers operating in\nIndonesia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The training organised by the DJID Kemkomdigi in Medan was attended\nby 40 participants, consisting of 20 students from SMK Multi Karya Medan\nand 20 students from SMK Negeri 4 Medan.<\/p>\n
Participants received training on installation, splicing, testing,\nand the maintenance of fibre optic networks in accordance with current\ntelecommunications industry requirements.<\/p>\n
As a form of support for vocational education, Kemkomdigi also handed\nover fibre optic installation practice equipment to SMK Multi Karya\nMedan and SMK Negeri 4 Medan to be used for ongoing learning\nactivities.<\/p>\n
