        "content": "<p>Ministry gets tough on shipping lines over THC<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>The government plans to get tough on shipping lines&apos;<br>\nrepresentatives who fail to present their permits as well as<br>\nthose who refuse to reduce terminal handling charges (THC) at<br>\nports, a minister says.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;According to our team&apos;s investigation results, there are 23<br>\nshipping owner representatives who do not have the proper<br>\n(operation) permit and nine others who were caught red-handed<br>\ncharging shippers with the old THCs,&quot; Minister of Transportation<br>\nHatta Radjasa announced on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the 23 representatives failed to show his ministry&apos;s<br>\nrecommendation letters, which are required to start operating in<br>\nthe country.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have informed all representatives of foreign shipping<br>\nlines to report themselves by tomorrow (Tuesday) at the latest or<br>\nwe will impose sanctions,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hatta mulled that his office could revoke the permits of<br>\nviolators. &quot;Violating a government regulation is similar to<br>\ncommitting a crime,&quot; he said earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry started monitoring shipping lines closely with<br>\nthe help of the shippers association after most of the 59 foreign<br>\nshipping companies refused to reduce the THCs.<\/p>\n<p>The government lowered on Nov. 1 the THC from US$150 to $95<br>\nper 20-foot container and from $230 to $145 for per 40-foot<br>\ncontainer.<\/p>\n<p>Hatta said that his team -- assisted by the National Police<br>\nand the Attorney General&apos;s Office -- have been formulating<br>\nsanctions for the violators. &quot;The first move would be reporting<br>\nthem to the Corruption Eradication Commission,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign shipping line agents violating new THC tariff:<\/p>\n<p>1.
