Ministry, Cisco agree to cooperate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Education and computer software
\nand hardware maker Cisco System Inc. have agreed to cooperate in
\nproviding an Internet-based training program for vocational
\nsecondary schools.<\/p>\n
Gatot Hari Priowirjanto, the director for vocational secondary
\neducation at the ministry, said the training program aimed at
\npreparing vocational students to become skilled workers with
\ninternational certification and qualifications.<\/p>\n
\"As an initial step, only five vocational schools will join
\nthe program which begins in June,\" Gatot told a media briefing
\nhere on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The five schools, which will join the program, are located in
\nJakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta and will be under the
\nsupervision of the University of Indonesia. They were selected
\nfrom about 30 schools, which had applied to take part in the
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
Gatot said the government would provide a US$5,500 loan for
\nevery school to help them prepare the infrastructure before
\nstarting the training.<\/p>\n
\"After two years, the loan must be repaid and be given to
\nother participants,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's Cisco country manager Hermanto Murniadi said Cisco
\nwould provide the curriculum free of charge as part of Cisco
\nSystems worldwide project called Cisco Networking Academy Program
\n(CNAP).<\/p>\n
\"Using the Internet as a media of learning, the program will
\nprovide all activities, including on-line registration, modules,
\nand assessment,\" Hermanto said.<\/p>\n
In order to provide the infrastructure, Cisco would give the
\nschools a 50 percent discount for each package which is normally
\nsold at $22,000, he said.<\/p>\n
The program has been developed since 1997. Nowadays, there are
\n114 countries worldwide developing the program with a total of
\n6,376 educational institutions. In Indonesia, since 1999
\nthe University of Bina Nusantara has joined the program, followed
\nby the University of Indonesia, Pelita Harapan University, and
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB).<\/p>\n
\"We expect the program will contribute around 300 skilled
\nmembers of the labor force per year who are capable of handling
\nCisco's products,\" he added.(03)<\/p>",
