Ministry, BPS cooperate in forestry data<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Forestry signed on Tuesday an agreement with
\nthe Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) to provide reliable data
\non timber production and exports for the government and public.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, which will last for five years, BPS will
\ncollect, compile and process data on the subjects from the field,
\nprovide it to the government and make it available to the public
\nvia a variety of information sources, including the Internet.<\/p>\n
The reason behind the agreement is the lack of data currently
\navailable on such matters. Furthermore, there are differences in
\ndata, especially on timber exports, produced by the Ministry of
\nIndustry and Trade, Ministry of Forestry, Department of Customs
\nand Excise and Bank Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The autonomy law has also disrupted the flow of data on these
\nmatters from regions to the central government, as regional
\ngovernments tend to prefer to keep it to themselves.<\/p>\n
All this has made it difficult for the central government to
\nformulate effective policy for the forestry sector.<\/p>\n
\"We have inaccurate, out of date and incomplete data. It is
\nvery hard for us at present to get proper data from the field
\nbecause they (regional governments) rarely send it to us,\" said
\nMinistry of Forestry secretary-general Wahjudi Wardojo.<\/p>\n
He added that most data had been collected by ministry
\nofficials based on discussion with people working in the field.<\/p>\n
\"With that kind of data it is hard for the government to make
\nimportant decisions for the benefit of the public, particularly
\nwith regard to illegal logging,\" said Wahjudi.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, aside from handling data on timber
\nproduction and exports, BPS will also provide data analysis and
\nstatistical training for ministry officials.<\/p>",
