        "content": "<p>Ministry attempts to boost efficiency<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Industry and Trade Tunky Ariwibowo<br>\nsaid yesterday that his ministry is trying to boost efficiency by<br>\nproviding better services to private sector businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\"How can our business sector be more efficient and more<br>\ncompetitive in the coming era of trade liberalization if our<br>\nbureaucracy is not efficient and does not provide better<br>\nservices,\" Tunky announced after opening a consolidation meeting<br>\nof his ministry.<\/p>\n<p>He said his ministry, which is an integration of the former<br>\nindustry and trade ministries, must have completed consolidation<br>\nby June to prepare improved service procedures because it is only<br>\nseven years until the implementation of trade liberalization<br>\namong the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations<br>\n(ASEAN) under its ASEAN Free Trade Area arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>The two ministries were merged late last year with the aim of<br>\nimproving coordination in Indonesia's preparations to face trade<br>\nliberalization and industrial globalization.<\/p>\n<p>Some 300 first, second and third echelon officials of the<br>\nministry -- including overseas-based trade and industrial<br>\nattaches and chiefs of Indonesian Trade Promotion Centers as well<br>\nas the chiefs of provincial trade and industry offices -- are<br>\nattending the five-day meeting.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 27 industry offices and 27 trade offices<br>\nin the country's provinces. Tunky said that the merger of the two<br>\nformer ministries will include the integration of all of its<br>\naffiliated offices.<\/p>\n<p>\"The target of the consolidation is that all the ministry's<br>\nofficials, who might have been taking different approaches, will<br>\ngain similar perceptions,\" sad Tunky.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the ministry's offices in the country have been<br>\ninstructed to enhance services, making them professional and<br>\nefficient, while overseas representatives are employed to promote<br>\nexports.
