        "content": "<p>Ministry announces winners of student science contest<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Education and Culture and the<br>\nIndonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) announced the winners of<br>\ntheir scientific contests for teenagers yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Faizal, a high school student studying aviation technology,<br>\ntook first prize in the ministry-sponsored contest, with his<br>\npaper entitled An electronic security system for a single railway<br>\ntrack between two stations.<\/p>\n<p>High school students Rini Yunianti, from the Central Java town<br>\nof Klaten, Yati Enoch and Tanti Verawati, both from Merauke,<br>\nIrian Jaya, won in the categories of social sciences and<br>\nhumanity, natural science and technology, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Faizal told reporters during the ceremony, which took place at<br>\nthe ministry, that he was inspired by a train accident in<br>\nBintaro, south Jakarta, eight years ago. The head-on collision,<br>\nwhich happened on Oct. 19, 1987, killed 129 passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five high school students from 14 provinces<br>\nparticipated in the contest, which was divided into 12<br>\ncategories, including biology, sociology, agriculture and<br>\nliterature.<\/p>\n<p>Another contest<\/p>\n<p>Rini Yunianti presented a paper entitled The impact of sand<br>\nquarrying in the Woro river in Manisrenggo village, Klaten.<\/p>\n<p>Yati Enoch, the winner in the natural science category,<br>\nentitled her paper White clay colloid as a basic wall paint<br>\nsubstance.<\/p>\n<p>In the technology category Tanti Verawati discussed the<br>\nprocessing technology of residue from Lates Calcarifer fish.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, one of the 31 LIPI-TVRI contest finalists, an<br>\nelementary school dropout, took runner-up in the social sciences<br>\ncategory.<\/p>\n<p>Alamsyah surprised members of the jury with his well-written<br>\npaper entitled The social, economic and environmental impacts of<br>\ncoral-reef mining in Lombok,.<\/p>\n<p>To date he is the only dropout to have participated in the<br>\ncontest.<\/p>\n<p>Alamsyah, who joined an NGO in Mataram, Lombok, conducted the<br>\nresearch based on his own experience and defended his paper at<br>\nthe final on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Adhiatma Prakasa, a junior high school student in Surabaya,<br>\nand Baiq Rani Dewi Wulandani, a high school student in Lombok,<br>\nWest Nusa Tenggara, were the first and second runners-up.<\/p>\n<p>The second prize went to Dwi Kusuma Wahyuni, a student from<br>\nJombang, East Java, and the third prize went to Delpi E.K.<br>\nSianipar, a student from Balige, North Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>At the same occasion the ministry also announced Dwi Hartanti<br>\nfrom Surabaya and Roby Ikhsan from Banda Aceh as the country&apos;s<br>\nmodel female and male junior high school students.<\/p>\n<p>Model students at the high school level were Astrid Kartika<br>\nfrom Yogyakarta and Erwin Karouw from Manado, North Sulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>Ideal teachers were also announced yesterday. They are<br>\nKartiwiningsih of Jayapura, Irian Jaya, in the kindergarten<br>\ncategory; Suhardi of Bondowoso, East Java, and Saryanto Andi<br>\nPrabowo from Magelang, Central Java, in the elementary school<br>\ncategory.<\/p>\n<p>Riyanto, a teacher from the Jayawijaya district in Irian Jaya,<br>\nwas named model teacher in the junior high school category, while<br>\nIbnu Hajar from Ngawi, East Java, won for model teacher in the<br>\nsenior high category.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro<br>\npresented an award to the Sopo Surung Foundation for<br>\nestablishing a boarding school in Balige, North Sumatra, in<br>\ncooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture.<\/p>\n<p>Wardiman said that the quality of the four-year-old school is<br>\nso laudable that 36 of its 40 graduates were admitted to state<br>\nuniversities.<\/p>\n<p>All contest winners have been invited to attend the<br>\nIndependence Day celebration at the Presidential Palace tomorrow.<br>\n(05)<\/p>",
