        "content": "<p>Ministers set up fund for ASEAN<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (JP): ASEAN foreign ministers signed an agreement<br>\nSaturday on the establishment of a Fund for ASEAN that will pool<br>\nmember countries' contributions for collaborative projects.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement provides for a new structure for the ASEAN fund,<br>\nwhich was established in 1969, and the guidelines for the fund's<br>\nutilization and management.<\/p>\n<p>Under the restructured ASEAN Fund, the contributions will be<br>\nmanaged by the ASEAN secretariat and each member country will no<br>\nlonger manage their contributions.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN officials said the fund will initially consist of US$6<br>\nmillion in equal contributions of $1 million each from member<br>\ncountries.<\/p>\n<p>The restructured ASEAN Fund allows it to respond to demands<br>\nfor ASEAN projects. Under the new institution, a portion of the<br>\navailable money will be set aside for income generating projects<br>\nand the remaining for collaborative projects.<\/p>\n<p>At least 50 percent of the income generated by the \"seed<br>\nfund\" will accrue to the project fund to meet the increasing<br>\ndemand for project financing.<\/p>\n<p>Projects eligible for the funds are those which promote ASEAN<br>\ncooperation.
