Ministers propose summit with Russia<\/p>\n
INDONESIA: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is
\nset to approve holding of its first summit with Russia in Kuala
\nLumpur next year, a senior official said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Makarim Wibisono, director general for Asia Pacific and
\nAfrican affairs at Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
\nconfirmed that senior ministers from Southeast Asia had proposed
\nholding the first leader-level meeting with Russia at next year's
\nASEAN Summit to be hosted by Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The proposal is expected to be approved at the 37th annual
\nASEAN foreign ministers meeting being held in Jakarta on Tuesday
\nto Wednesday, Makarim said.<\/p>\n
The meeting is also expected to approve a detailed plan for
\nestablishing an ASEAN Security Community (ASC) being pushed by
\nIndonesia, calling for closer cooperation in the realm of
\nsecurity among the 10-member organization.<\/p>\n
The proposal has met some resistance from members, some of
\nwhom oppose ASEAN's trend away from a strict policy of non-
