Ministers expected to support athletes in SEAG<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): After President B.J. Habibie visited the
\nnation's athletes being groomed for the 20th Southeast Asian
\n(SEA) Games, the National Sports Council (KONI) urged other
\ngovernment leaders to support athletes in Brunei Darussalam next
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's chef de mission for the Games, Mochammad Hindarto,
\ntold reporters on Tuesday that ministers and top officials, many
\nof whom chair sports organizations, were expected to support
\nathletes at the biennial event from Aug. 7 to Aug. 15.<\/p>\n
Among top officials expected to arrive in Bandar Seri Begawan
\nnamed by Hindarto were State Minister of the Empowerment of State
\nEnterprises Tanri Abeng, who is chairman of the Indonesian Tennis
\nAssociation (Pelti); Minister of Industry and Trade Rahardi
\nRamelan, chairman of the Indonesian Swimming Federation (PRSI);
\nMinister of Defense and Security\/Indonesian Military (TNI)
\nCommander Gen. Wiranto, who chairs the Indonesian Karate
\nFederation (Forki) and the Indonesian Contract Bridge Association
\n(Gabbsi).<\/p>\n
Minister of Justice\/State Secretary Muladi, and the Governor
\nof Indonesian Resilience Institute (Lemhanas) Lt. Gen. Agum
\nGumelar, who chairs the All Indonesian Soccer Federation (PSSI),
\nhave confirmed plans to attend the Games.<\/p>\n
\"The SEA Games organizers have asked us to enlist the
\nministers and state officials who also serve as sports
\norganization chairpersons. The organizers want to give the best
\nservice for them,\" said Hindarto.<\/p>\n
He said two more doctors, an orthopedist and a doping expert
\nwould join the contingent. This is in addition to the six doctors
\nKONI was sending for the event.<\/p>\n
Twenty sports are scheduled to be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah
\nSports Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan. The complex consists of a
\nmain stadium, track-and-field stadium, tennis center, indoor
\nbadminton center, multi-purpose hall for pencak silat, squash
\ncourt, bowls field, hockey stadium and swimming pool.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the host's preparations to welcome about 4,000
\nathletes and officials to the Games, Hindarto said Brunei
\nauthorities had provided public transportation to allow athletes,
\nofficials and journalists to travel from their hotels to sports
\nvenues.<\/p>\n
\"Obviously they want to give the best service to their guests.
\nThere is less public transportation operated in Brunei, because
\neveryone owns cars,\" he said. (ivy)<\/p>",
