Ministers, DPR slow to report assets<\/p>\n

None of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's Cabinet members had
\nsubmitted a wealth report to the Corruption Eradication
\nCommission (KPK) as of Friday, a commission member stated.<\/p>\n
As part of efforts to create a clean government, Susilo told
\nhis new ministers last Friday to submit their reports to the
\ncommission within a week.<\/p>\n
But KPK deputy chairman Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas said Friday
\nthat his office had yet to get the reports from the Cabinet
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
He also said that none of the legislators sworn in on Oct. 1
\nhad submitted their wealth reports.<\/p>\n
\"We haven't received any,\" Erry said.<\/p>\n
The commission, which was set up to fight corruption here,
\ngave legislators until Nov. 1 to submit their wealth reports.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, KPK chairman Taufikurrahman Ruki met Cabinet
\nSecretary Sudi Silalahi, however Sudi requested more time for the
\nministers to complete their wealth reports.<\/p>\n
There was no official announcement about their tardiness, but
\nRuki said that some of the new ministers had never filled out a
\nwealth report and so were not familiar with the requirements.<\/p>\n
As for the legislators, KPK director for wealth reports M.
\nYasin said the office had not yet received any wealth reports
\nfrom the new national or city legislators.<\/p>\n
He explained that his office had asked the General Elections
\nCommission (KPU) to forward the wealth reports that they had
\nreceived from legislators before the election.<\/p>\n
\"We do not have exact figures for all the regional and
\nnational legislators across the country. But the KPU has those
\nfigures,\" Yasin said.<\/p>\n
Candidates contesting the April 5 legislative elections were
\nrequired to submit their wealth reports to the commission before
\nbeing declared eligible to run.<\/p>\n
There are roughly 12,000 legislators at various administrative
\nlevels around the country.<\/p>\n
KPU member Mulyana W. Kusuma admitted that his office had the
\nreports, but stressed that they were not complete.<\/p>\n
\"The reports are very short, but we will send them if the KPK
\nneeds them,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Law No. 28\/1999 on good governance and Law No. 30\/2002 on the
\nantigraft commission requires state officials to declare their
\nwealth before and after assuming office.<\/p>\n
The laws require other state officials, including legislators,
\nto submit their wealth reports to the KPK in a bid to maintain
\ntransparency and monitor possible irregularities.<\/p>\n
However, there is no penalty stipulated for state officials
\nwho fail to disclose their wealth. If state officials make false
\nstatements on their wealth reports, they can only be charged with
\nmaking false reports.<\/p>\n
The KPK will only look into reports that seem to contain
\nirregularities.<\/p>",
