"content": "<p>Cooperatives Minister Ferry Juliantoro is encouraging the\ntransformation of sugarcane farmer cooperatives to become more\nprofessional, productive, and better governed, given their vital role in\nthe national sugar industry ecosystem. He stated that this\ntransformation should not only be driven by the government but also\nemerge from the grassroots, from the sugarcane farmers themselves and\nthe community. The remarks were made during a gathering of smallholder\nsugarcane farmers focused on strengthening the sugar industry ecosystem\nthrough cooperative-based synergy involving the LPDB Cooperative fund\nand PT PG Rajawali I, in support of food security and national sugar\nself-sufficiency across Java. According to him, the established\ncooperation between PT PG Rajawali I and sugarcane farmer cooperatives\nrepresents an important step in improving farmer welfare whilst\nsimultaneously strengthening the national sugar industry. He said the\nprogramme is a continuation of efforts to reinforce and transform\nsugarcane farmer cooperatives for better governance. He added that\nsupport from the LPDB Cooperative includes not only financing but also\nmentoring, training, and technical guidance for cooperatives. He\nexplained that this assistance is expected to boost the productivity and\nproduction volume of smallholder sugarcane. Eventually, the entire\nharvest will be absorbed by PT PG Rajawali I to be processed into sugar\nand various derivative products. The resulting sugar production will\nthen be marketed more widely, including through the network of Merah\nPutih Village\/Sub-district Cooperatives currently being developed by the\ngovernment. The hope is that sugarcane farmer cooperatives can grow on a\nlarger scale, become more professional, and deliver greater economic\nbenefits to their members. Ferry also revealed that the Ministry of\nCooperatives will strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of\nAgriculture to support comprehensive agricultural sector development,\nspanning food crops, horticulture, and plantations. The synergy between\nthe two ministries is expected to provide solutions to various problems\nfaced by farmers while accelerating the implementation of strategic\ngovernment programmes. Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Agriculture\nSudaryono affirmed that Indonesia has now achieved self-sufficiency in\nconsumption sugar, meaning it no longer relies on imports to meet public\nneeds. For refined or industrial sugar, he said the government is\ncurrently working towards achieving self-reliance, whilst also\nsupporting sugarcane-based renewable energy development. He noted that\nsugar imports are currently only conducted to meet the needs of refined\nsugar used by the industrial sector, but all sugar requirements, both\nfor consumption and industry, are gradually being targeted for domestic\nfulfilment. He concluded that the President\u2019s directive is for all sugar\nneeds, both consumption and refined sugar for industry, to be met from\ndomestic production wherever possible.<\/p>",
