Minister under fire for deforestation<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: Thirty activists from three environmental
\nprotection groups here lodged a protest against rampant
\ndeforestation with State Minister for the Environment Nabiel
\nMakarim on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Riau Forest Rescue Network (Jikalahari), the Indonesian
\nForum for the Environment (Walhi) in Riau and the Association of
\nNon-Political Organizations of Riau demanded that the minister
\ncancel environmental permits for 312 companies they said had
\nfailed to conserve forests in Riau.<\/p>\n
They also demanded that companies converting natural forests
\nin Riau be denied environmental permits and that relevant
\nregencies stop issuing licenses for pulp production increases in
\ntheir respective areas.<\/p>\n
In response, the visiting Nabiel expressed his gratitude to
\nthe protesters and said he hoped more information on Riau's
\nenvironmental situation would be addressed to his office in East
