        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 The Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has stated\nthat immediate changes and remedial measures are necessary to prevent\nfurther waste collapses at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing\nFacility (TPST), which have resulted in loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued in Jakarta on Monday, the Environment Minister\nand head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif indicated that\nhis office has already issued warnings to Jakarta\u2019s Provincial\nGovernment, which manages the facility, regarding open dumping practices\nat Bantargebang TPST and has initiated environmental audits as part of\nmandatory administrative sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will closely oversee serious changes to waste management at\nBantargebang specifically and Jakarta generally. Immediate reforms are\nessential because even if a new waste processing facility (PSEL) is\nconstructed, it will still take another three years,\u201d said Environment\nMinister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.<\/p>\n<p>This statement was made following the minister\u2019s inspection of search\nand evacuation operations for victims of the waste collapse on Sunday (8\nMarch). By Sunday, four fatalities had been recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in January 2026 the subsidence of a loading ramp pulled\nthree waste trucks into a river, followed by another collapse of the\nwaste pile in March 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The overhaul of waste management aligns with directions from\nPresident Prabowo Subianto that many waste disposal sites across\nIndonesia have an average lifespan of 17 years or are approaching the\nend of their operational life of 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The minister specifically highlighted that Bantargebang TPST is 37\nyears old and has exceeded its usage period. According to him, waste\ndisposal should no longer occur at this location.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the government is prioritising the evacuation of all\nvictims while launching a comprehensive investigation to take firm\naction against any management negligence that endangers public\nsafety.<\/p>\n<p>As a long-term solution, Bantargebang TPST will be converted\nexclusively for inorganic waste through strengthening source-based waste\nseparation systems and optimising the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) facility\nat Rorotan.<\/p>",
