Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara stated that\nthe government is striving to accelerate the development of\ntransmigration areas in Papua by optimising local potential and\nenhancing community capacity. One such effort involves the placement of\n1,200 participants from the 2026 Patriot Expedition Team (TEP) across\nseveral transmigration areas in Papua. The TEP participants consist of\nacademics, researchers, and experts from various universities. They are\ntasked not only with conducting research and mapping but also with\nhelping communities increase productivity and income, develop local\nbusinesses, open market access and investment, and create jobs. \u201cThe\nmost important thing is how much impact is generated. The measure is not\nhow many participants we send, but the real change we leave behind for\nthe community,\u201d Iftitah said during a Government Press Conference at the\nBakom RI Auditorium, State Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 12\nAugust 2026. Out of a total of 1,476 TEP 2026 participants,\napproximately 1,200 people, forming around 200 teams, are placed in\nPapua. According to Iftitah, this placement is part of the government\u2019s\neffort to accelerate equitable development and improve community\nwelfare, particularly in eastern Indonesia. Iftitah said the presence of\nthe Patriots must provide benefits that can be directly felt by the\ncommunity. Therefore, the programme\u2019s success is measured not only by\nresearch activities but also by the problems successfully solved, the\ntechnology that can be applied, the increase in productivity and income,\nand the growth of businesses and jobs. \u201cSuccess is measured by the\nproblems solved, the technology used by the community, increased\nproductivity and income, upgraded MSMEs and local businesses, products\nwith added value, open markets and offtakers, and the investment and\njobs created,\u201d he said. According to Iftitah, development in Papua must\nbe tailored to the characteristics of each region. Land conditions,\nweather, terrain, leading commodities, and the social and cultural\ncharacter of the community are considerations in determining the\nprogrammes to be implemented. \u201cThere is no one-size-fits-all development\nin this country. The system must be tailor-made. Each region has\ndifferent potentials and problems. Therefore, the approach cannot be\nuniform,\u201d he said. This approach, Iftitah said, is expected to make\ndevelopment more targeted. In areas with agricultural potential, for\ninstance, the Patriots can help increase production, post-harvest\nprocessing, and open marketing access. Meanwhile, in areas with local\nsuperior products, assistance is directed at improving quality,\npackaging, production capacity, and selling value. The Patriots are\nplaced in several transmigration areas in Papua, including Lereh in\nJayapura; Senggi in Keerom; Salor and Muting in Merauke; Prafi in\nManokwari; Momiwaren in South Manokwari; Werianggi-Werabur in Wondama\nBay; Bomberay-Tomage and Weri-Saharey in Fakfak; and Klamono-Segun in\nSorong. The assignment involves 10 partner universities: Bandung\nInstitute of Technology, Diponegoro University, IPB University, Gadjah\nMada University, Airlangga University, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of\nTechnology, University of Indonesia, Padjadjaran University, Hasanuddin\nUniversity, and Brawijaya University. Iftitah said the involvement of\nuniversities is expected to bring science and technology closer to the\ncommunity. According to him, the knowledge produced by universities\nshould not stop in lecture halls, journals, or laboratories, but should\nbe used to answer development problems in the regions. \u201cWe want to bring\na flood of science and technology to transmigration areas. Knowledge\nmust reach the community and become a tool to increase their\nproductivity, income, and welfare,\u201d he said. TEP 2026 is a continuation\nof the programme run in 2025. At that time, 2,000 researchers were\ndeployed to 154 transmigration areas to map the potential and problems\nin each region. The results of that mapping serve as the basis for the\ngovernment to determine more concrete interventions this year. If the\n2025 programme focused on identifying potential and problems, TEP 2026\nis directed at implementing solutions and creating economic impact. The\ngovernment has also reduced the scope of assisted areas from 154 to 53\npriority areas so that resources and programmes can be more\nconcentrated. \u201cOur focus is no longer just expanding reach, but\nincreasing benefits.
