Timor deportations<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said on <br>\nTuesday over 200 Indonesians were deported from neighboring East <br>\nTimor because they did not have valid documents.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan downplayed suggestions the deported Indonesians, all <br>\nMuslims, were deported from the predominantly Catholic East Timor <br>\nbecause of their religion.<\/p>\n<p>\"It has been a long-standing issue because they insisted on <br>\nstaying in the country after the referendum,\" the minister said, <br>\nadding that the deported people had refused offers from the <br>\nIndonesian envoy in East Timor to help them secure passports and <br>\nother documents.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier last week, the government of East Timor deported 270 <br>\nIndonesians who had been living in Dili. -- JP<\/p>",
