        "content": "<p>Minimum wage under dispute<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: The provincial authorities and representatives of<br>\nemployers and workers unions failed on Wednesday to approve the<br>\nminimum monthly wage for 2003.<\/p>\n<p>The Yogyakarta governor has proposed that the minimum salary<br>\nbe increased to Rp 365,500 (US$40) from Rp 321,250. The new<br>\nsalary ceiling offered by the governor is in line with workers<br>\nunions, which are demanding that the new wage be no less than Rp<br>\n360,000.<\/p>\n<p>Employers have agreed that the salary be increased, but should<br>\nnot exceed Rp 350,000, citing the slow economic growth forecast<br>\nfor next year.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Bali bombing has adversely affected the economy in<br>\nYogyakarta. The rising inflation rate will weaken employers'<br>\ncapability to pay salaries,\" said Jadin Jamaluddin of the<br>\nassociation of textile companies.<\/p>\n<p>Jadin added that the economic slump had sparked the planned<br>\ndismissal of 200 textile workers in January next year.<\/p>\n<p>Participants of the meeting, which was presided over by Deputy<br>\nGovernor Paku Alam VIII, agreed to bring the matter back to the<br>\ngovernor. -- JP<\/p>",
