Minimum wage for domestic helpers to be introduced<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Manpower Office is considering to set
\nminimum wages for domestic helpers to improve their living
\nstandards.<\/p>\n
The regulations are currently being prepared by the
\nremuneration commission, Haryono, a member of the commission,
\ntold The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said the regulations will follow a study recently conducted
\nby the University of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"The study sets three minimum wages: Rp 20,000 a month for a
\nhelper working for a lower class family, Rp 40,000 for the middle
\nclass and Rp 60,000 for the upper class,\" Haryono said.<\/p>\n
He added that the commission has not decided whether minimum
\nwages will follow the study exactly. \"We are still reviewing it,\"
\nhe reiterated.<\/p>\n
Aslam Sumbhudi, a staff member from the university, said that
\nthe families were not classified based on their income but on how
\nmuch land they live on.<\/p>\n
\"It's difficult to classify families based on their income and
\nthe city administration has agreed with the classification
\nsystem,\" Aslam said.<\/p>\n
He explained lower class families are those living on less
\nthan 36 square-meters of land, middle class on 36 to 150 square-
\nmeters and upper class on more than 150 square-meters.<\/p>\n
Aslam said the minimum wages proposed is monthly take-home
\npay. It does not include food, boarding and recreation allowances
\nprovided by the family.<\/p>\n
The head of the office, Suhatman, explained that the
\nintroduction of a minimum wage is designed to enable the city
\nadministration to protect servants.<\/p>\n
\"This is part of the city administration's plan to
\nto control the operation of servant distribution companies,\"
\nSuhatman said.<\/p>\n
He said that out of the 101 servant distribution companies
\nregistered at his office, only 25 have permits from the
\nmunicipality.<\/p>\n
But the city administration cannot do anything to close the
\nremainder down because of the absence of proper laws, he said.
