Mines Ministry denies authority<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Mines and Energy denied it was
\nresponsible for issuing permits for sand quarrying in North
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The ministry's public relations office announced Friday that
\nthe ministry issued permits for off-shore sand quarrying in
\ngeneral.<\/p>\n
But permits for companies operating in the Seribu Islands and
\nin the Jakarta Bay are issued by the municipality. The decision
\nof the ministry was signed in November 1985.<\/p>\n
Earlier mayor Suprawito said the city had no authority to
\nissue sand quarrying permits in the Seribu Islands as permits
\nrested with the Ministry of Mines and Energy.<\/p>\n
Supervision of environmental damage was raised in the media
\nlast week following reports of the disappearance of at least six
\nof the Seribu Islands. Uncontrolled sand quarrying was one of the
\nreported causes.<\/p>\n
Councilor Bandjar Marpaung had said supervision of the Seribu
\nIslands did not lie with the city alone. Besides the Ministry of
\nMines and Energy, the city must also deal with the Directorate
\nGeneral of Sea Affairs under the Ministry of Transportation, the
\nNavy and other offices in matters regarding coastal management.<\/p>\n
The head of the city's environmental study and monitoring
\noffice, Ali Rozi, had said the autonomy of the city was crucial
\nin preserving the islands and their surroundings. He said the
\ncentral government should be held responsible for damage in the
\nSeribu Islands. (11)<\/p>",
