Miners blamed for park damage<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Some 255 hectare of the 30,000 hectare Gunung
\nHalimun national park has been damaged allegedly by illegal
\nmining activities, an official said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
An official at the local branch of the Regional Environmental
\nImpact Management Agency (Bapedalda), Eran Subarna, said the
\ndamaged areas were polluted with mercury, a substance used by
\nminers to separate gold from other elements.<\/p>\n
Forest rehabilitation and efforts to reduce the impact of
\nmercury pollution on the damaged areas were underway, Eran said.<\/p>\n
Of the total 255 hectare of damaged forest, Eran said, 26.34
\nhectares had been rejuvenated.<\/p>\n
The agency, in cooperation with the management of the Gunung
\nHalimun National Park, has planted some 22,870 trees in the
\ndestroyed areas, including pinus, mahogany, kaliandara, albasia,
\nAfrican wood and waru tree.<\/p>\n
The Halimun national park, spanning across the regencies of
\nLebak, Bogor and Sukabumi, in Banten and West Java, is a crucial
\nwater catchment areas for at least 30 million people, including
