Mine workers need certification: Expert<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Indonesian Mining Experts
\nsuggested yesterday that a system be developed to certify and
\nstandardize the technical qualifications of heavy machinery
\noperators in the country.<\/p>\n
Gde Suratha, an executive of the association, told a seminar
\nyesterday that such a certification and standardization system is
\nrequired to make it easier for companies to recruit operators of
\nheavy equipment.<\/p>\n
Suratha said such a system is also required to facilitate the
\nmovement of machinery operators within the ASEAN region or even
\nworldwide.<\/p>\n
He added that so far only PT United Tractors and PT Freeport
\nIndonesia have been implementing a certification system for heavy
\nmachinery operators which is built into their own in-house
\ntraining programs.<\/p>\n
He said that currently Indonesia has no standardization and
\ncertification for mining workers, including heavy equipment
\noperators and technicians.<\/p>\n
The state-owned companies PT Tambang Timah and PT Tambang
\nBatubara have a standardization for the qualifications of their
\nworkers but only in terms of occupational safety, he said.<\/p>\n
He said that the standardization should be based on the
\nInternational standards such as those used in the United States
