        "content": "<p>Amidst increasingly diverse and interconnected Southeast Asian\nsocieties, efforts to strengthen social cohesion through dialogue,\ntolerance, and cross-community cooperation are considered a crucial\nfoundation for maintaining sustainable peace. Various initiatives\npromoting harmony amidst differences continue to receive regional\nattention and appreciation. One such form of recognition is the Harmony\nin Diversity Award, an honour for individuals in Southeast Asia who\ndemonstrate extraordinary dedication to building social harmony and\nstrengthening relations between communities of different cultural and\nreligious backgrounds. In its inaugural edition, the award was presented\nto Archbishop Emeritus of Cotabato, Cardinal Orlando Beltran Quevedo.\nThe award, presented by Temasek Foundation with the 5P Global Movement\nas the supporting secretariat, highlights Cardinal Quevedo\u2019s\nlong-standing contribution to promoting dialogue and peace in Mindanao,\nPhilippines. As the first cardinal from Mindanao, Quevedo is widely\nknown as a figure who consistently champions interfaith dialogue as a\nway to build trust and overcome social divisions. He believes that\nrelationships forged through daily interactions among people of\ndifferent faiths form a crucial basis for creating sustainable peace.\nDuring his service, Cardinal Quevedo also actively encouraged conflict\nresolution through social and political approaches emphasising justice,\nrespect for indigenous peoples\u2019 rights, and addressing various\nhistorical injustices in the region. In 1996, he co-founded the\nBishops-Ulama Conference, a forum bringing together Catholic,\nProtestant, and Muslim leaders in a platform for interfaith dialogue and\ncooperation. He was also involved in various peace policy advocacy\nefforts, including supporting the creation of the Bangsamoro Basic Law\nto strengthen the protection of fundamental community rights. The\nHarmony in Diversity Award was first launched in August 2025 with the\naim of broadening understanding of the importance of social harmony,\nstrengthening the impact of change-makers at the community level, and\nbuilding a regional network committed to creating peaceful and inclusive\nsocieties. This year, the award received over 70 nominations from\nvarious Southeast Asian countries, reflecting the significant attention\ngiven to efforts to strengthen social cohesion through community\nleadership, dialogue, and cross-sector collaboration. Patron of the\nHarmony in Diversity Award and former President of Singapore, Halimah\nYacob, said the award exists to appreciate individuals who choose to\nbuild bridges amidst differences and strengthen societal unity.\n\u201cCardinal Quevedo embodies that spirit through his decades-long\ndedication to building peace and strengthening inter-community relations\nin Mindanao,\u201d Halimah stated. Meanwhile, Executive Director and Chief\nExecutive Officer of Temasek Foundation, Ng Boon Heong, said Cardinal\nQuevedo\u2019s work serves as a reminder that harmony is not created\ninstantly, but is built through long-term commitment, patience, and\nsustained effort. Founder of the 5P Global Movement, Arsjad Rasjid,\nadded that the award aims to celebrate individuals who demonstrate that\nsustainable peace is born from mutual trust, respect, and the courage to\nbridge differences. \u201cCardinal Quevedo\u2019s work also reflects the spirit of\ndiversity that becomes a strength in building a more inclusive society,\u201d\nArsjad said. Cardinal Quevedo himself said he was honoured to receive\nthe award.
