        "content": "<p>Indonesian Mining Industry Holding MIND ID has set a target to reduce\ngreenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 15.5 percent, equivalent to\napproximately 2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), by 2030. This\ntarget is being launched amidst projections of a near doubling of energy\ndemand in line with the national strategic mineral downstreaming\nprogramme. MIND ID\u2019s Division Head of Sustainability, Binahidra\nLogiardi, stated that the challenge of decarbonising the mining sector\nis becoming increasingly complex precisely amid the expansion of the\ndownstreaming programme, which is the company\u2019s primary mandate. The\ndownstreaming programme requires high energy consumption, and MIND ID is\ncontinuously integrating related sustainability programmes to optimise\nGHG emission control efforts. \u201cWith the downstreaming mandate given to\nMIND ID, our operational energy needs are estimated to increase nearly\ntwofold by 2030. Moreover, these emissions are projected to increase by\nabout 2.1 times if no intervention is made,\u201d he said in a statement on\nSunday (28\/6\/2026). Based on the company\u2019s projections, the MIND ID\nGroup\u2019s energy needs will increase from around 149 thousand terajoules\n(TJ) in 2026 to 293 thousand TJ in 2030, a surge of more than 90\npercent. Without intervention, GHG emissions are projected to increase\nfrom 6,100 kilotonnes of CO2e to 12,900 kilotonnes of CO2e over the same\nperiod. This surge reflects the scale of expansion underway, ranging\nfrom mine development in Kalimantan, an electric vehicle battery\necosystem project in East Halmahera, aluminium facility expansion,\nsmelter construction, to underwater mining projects. Therefore, MIND ID\nis pursuing a number of strategic steps to ensure that the growth of\nthis downstreaming programme proceeds with integrated and impactful\nenvironmental programmes. The first step is conversion to low-carbon\nfuels, which includes increasing the use of biodiesel from B35 to B40,\nreplacing High Speed Diesel (HSD) with liquefied natural gas (LNG), and\noptimising the use of electricity from the PLN grid. PT Bukit Asam Tbk\nhas implemented this step through the use of a Bucket Wheel Excavator\n(BWE) for coal handling at the Tanjung Enim Mining Unit, replacing\nfossil-fuelled dump trucks and successfully reducing emissions by\napproximately 5,200 tonnes of CO2e per year. PT Indonesia Asahan\nAluminium (INALUM) has also converted from HSD to LNG at its baking\nplant facility, resulting in an emission reduction of approximately\n3,700 tonnes of CO2e while improving operational energy efficiency. On\nthe renewable energy front, MIND ID is expanding the use of biomass and\nsolar energy. PT Indonesia Chemical Alumina (ICA) is implementing\nco-firing using palm kernel shell biomass as a partial replacement for\ncoal, reducing emissions by approximately 560 tonnes of CO2e. PT Timah\nTbk operates a solar power plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 300 kilowatt\npeak (kWp) capable of reducing emissions by approximately 300 tonnes of\nCO2e while promoting the use of clean energy in industrial areas.\nComplementing the direct reduction strategy, MIND ID is developing a\ncarbon offset scheme through nature-based solutions (NBS) projects, the\nutilisation of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and participation\nin carbon trading. Binahidra emphasised that decarbonisation efforts are\nnot merely an environmental obligation but also a determining factor for\nthe competitiveness of Indonesian mineral products in the global market.\nInvestors, financial institutions, and international supply chains are\nincreasingly stringent in requiring sustainability aspects as a\ncondition for market access. \u201cWe are committed to supporting Indonesia\u2019s\ntarget of achieving the Second NDC in 2030 and the aspiration for\nIndonesia\u2019s Net Zero Emissions. Therefore, our entire strategy must\nintegrate ESG aspects into the company\u2019s operations,\u201d said Binahidra.\nThrough these various initiatives, MIND ID\u2019s transformation towards\noperations with more managed carbon emissions is a tangible commitment\nto ensuring that downstreaming expansion generates economic added value\nas well as environmental benefits for Indonesia.<\/p>",
