Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Mining Industry Holding Company,\nMIND ID, is directing national mineral management to no longer rely\nsolely on extraction activities and commodity sales, but to evolve into\na basis for industrialisation to create added value and strengthen\nIndonesia\u2019s economic structure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Government has tasked MIND ID with ensuring that Indonesia\u2019s\nmineral wealth does not stop at the extraction process. These natural\nresources must serve as the foundation for industrialisation capable of\nstrengthening the national economic structure and enhancing Indonesia\u2019s\neconomic sovereignty,\u201d said Selly Adriatika, MIND ID\u2019s Division Head of\nInstitutional Relations, in a statement in Jakarta on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Selly stated that this transformation is necessary given that\nIndonesia possesses vast strategic mineral reserves, meaning the\neconomic benefits must be optimised through processing, downstreaming,\nand the development of domestic industries.<\/p>\n
According to her, large natural resource reserves do not\nautomatically produce optimal economic benefits if management remains\nfocused on commodity sales and remains highly dependent on global market\nprice movements.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the development direction of the mining industry needs to\nbe expanded through the strengthening of domestic mineral processing,\nthe construction of downstream industries, the integration of strategic\nmineral value chains, and the creation of products and raw materials\nrequired by national industries.<\/p>\n
Data from the Geological Agency shows that Indonesia holds\napproximately 42 per cent of the world\u2019s nickel reserves. Indonesia also\nholds a strategic position in the reserves of several other commodities,\nincluding tin, bauxite, gold, copper, and coal.<\/p>\n
According to Selly, the vastness of these resources presents an\nopportunity for Indonesia to transform from a commodity supplier into a\nresource-based industrial nation with higher economic added value.<\/p>\n
This transformation is also considered vital because minerals and\ncoal are non-renewable resources.<\/p>\n
Consequently, their management must generate greater and long-term\neconomic benefits, including through the growth of investment,\nprocessing industries, technological mastery, and derivative economic\nactivities.<\/p>\n
Selly noted that developing mineral value chains also requires\nstrategic partnerships with industrial players and international\ninvestors, particularly to accelerate technology transfer and mastery\nwhile expanding market access for Indonesia\u2019s downstream products.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the integration of various strategic mineral value\nchains needs to be strengthened so that mining does not develop as an\nisolated economic activity, but rather connects with the manufacturing\nsector and its derivative industries.<\/p>\n
This step is expected to create new sources of economic growth while\nreducing the mining sector\u2019s performance dependence on commodity exports\nand raw material price fluctuations in the global market.<\/p>\n
MIND ID also places the strengthening of state control over strategic\nmineral resources as part of the direction for national mining\nmanagement, as mandated by Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution regarding\nthe utilisation of the earth, water, and natural wealth for the greatest\nprosperity of the people.<\/p>\n
Within this framework, control over strategic mineral and coal\nreserves, including assets previously controlled by foreign parties, is\ndirected to provide greater economic benefits for Indonesia and\nstrengthen the state\u2019s position in managing natural resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur goal does not stop at mine management.
