        "content": "<p>Millions affected as floods strike India\u2019s Bihar<\/p>\n<p>Bihar is downstream from Nepal, which suffered deadly flooding last\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>PATNA, India: Flooding in India\u2019s eastern Bihar state has affected\nnearly five million people, officials said on Tuesday (Sep 15) as aid\nwas being sent to the worst-hit areas.<\/p>\n<p>Bihar is among India\u2019s most flood-prone states and all seven of its\nkey rivers measured above their \u201cdanger level\u201d on Tuesday after heavy\nrain, according to the state water resources department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFood, clean drinking water, medicines, and other essential\nfacilities are being continuously provided to the needy families,\u201d Vijay\nKumar Chaudhary, Bihar\u2019s deputy chief minister, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said 7,000 rupees (US$72) each had\nbeen transferred to more than 827,000 flood-affected families in the\nstate.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly five million people have been affected by floods, according to\nfigures from Bihar\u2019s Disaster Management Department.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s \u201cpriority is that every affected family gets flood\nrelief and reconstruction work is done with a spirit of building back\nbetter\u201d, Choudhary said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Flooding began this month and local media have reported 20 deaths,\nwhile officials said swaths of farmland have been swamped. Bihar is\ndownstream from Nepal, which suffered deadly flooding last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlood is our fate, every year we face it,\u201d said Chandan Kumar Mahto,\n46, a resident of Saran district. \u201cWe are helpless \u2026 we are struggling\nfor food, safe drinking water and milk for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bihar\u2019s government is made up of a coalition of parties, including\nPrime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party.<\/p>\n<p>It said it had opened 13 relief camps, with more than 1,000 community\nkitchens and nearly 1,800 boats deployed in flood-hit areas.<\/p>\n<p>Modi has sent a federal government team to conduct a \u201cdetailed\nassessment of damages\u201d, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Lakhmania Devi, 42, from Vaishali district, said she and her family\ntook shelter on their roof after floodwaters entered their home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live like nomads, without a kitchen to prepare food and drink\ndirty water to survive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hari Mandal, 28, a labourer from Ghogha village in Bhagalpur\ndistrict, said he could not work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it will continue longer, I will go without food as there are no\nsavings left to survive,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
