        "content": "<p>Military to help city fight street crime<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Greater Jakarta military commander, Maj.<br>\nGen. Sutiyoso, said yesterday that he is ready to back up<br>\nGovernor Surjadi Soedirdja in battling hoodlums.<\/p>\n<p>Sutiyoso said that troops could be sent wherever and whenever<br>\nthey were needed to combat the hoodlums, whose activities have<br>\nreached an \"intolerable level.\"<\/p>\n<p>\"They have disturbed public order. That must be curbed<br>\nproperly,\" he said yesterday after inaugurating the Armed Forces<br>\nRural Civic Program in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He asked people to report to the military command if they ever<br>\nsaw hoodlums in action in their area. Public participation is<br>\nneeded to help reduce crimes committed by the hoodlums, the<br>\ngeneral stressed.<\/p>\n<p>\"Just name the criminals, we will catch them,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Surjadi has asked Jakartans to be brave and fight<br>\ncriminals and hoodlums.<\/p>\n<p>\"Unfortunately, the people do not seem to be uniting to combat<br>\ncriminals. People should campaign hand in hand to tackle them,\"<br>\nSurjadi said when inaugurating the city public order officers on<br>\nFriday.<\/p>\n<p>An antique trader was stabbed to death by three drunk men on<br>\nJl. Kali Baru, Senen district, Central Jakarta on Saturday. The<br>\nvictim, Dadang Iskandar, was stabbed after he refused to give<br>\nmoney to the men, who are known as notorious hoodlums in the<br>\narea.<\/p>\n<p>Such lawbreakers operate in public places in the city,<br>\nincluding shopping centers, railway stations and bus terminals.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Police shot to death a hoodlum in Kampung Rambutan<br>\nbus terminal. The hoodlum, identified as Roy Manulang, often<br>\nasked drivers and passengers for money.<\/p>\n<p>Massive crackdowns against hoodlums and street criminals were<br>\nconducted by police and troops following the killing of a police<br>\nofficer in the Blok M area shopping center last year.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people were arrested, but released after being<br>\ntaught military discipline and practical skills, in the hope that<br>\nthey could get a job for their future.
