Military to help city fight street crime<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Greater Jakarta military commander, Maj.
\nGen. Sutiyoso, said yesterday that he is ready to back up
\nGovernor Surjadi Soedirdja in battling hoodlums.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said that troops could be sent wherever and whenever
\nthey were needed to combat the hoodlums, whose activities have
\nreached an \"intolerable level.\"<\/p>\n
\"They have disturbed public order. That must be curbed
\nproperly,\" he said yesterday after inaugurating the Armed Forces
\nRural Civic Program in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He asked people to report to the military command if they ever
\nsaw hoodlums in action in their area. Public participation is
\nneeded to help reduce crimes committed by the hoodlums, the
\ngeneral stressed.<\/p>\n
\"Just name the criminals, we will catch them,\" Sutiyoso said.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi has asked Jakartans to be brave and fight
\ncriminals and hoodlums.<\/p>\n
\"Unfortunately, the people do not seem to be uniting to combat
\ncriminals. People should campaign hand in hand to tackle them,\"
\nSurjadi said when inaugurating the city public order officers on
\nFriday.<\/p>\n
An antique trader was stabbed to death by three drunk men on
\nJl. Kali Baru, Senen district, Central Jakarta on Saturday. The
\nvictim, Dadang Iskandar, was stabbed after he refused to give
\nmoney to the men, who are known as notorious hoodlums in the
\narea.<\/p>\n
Such lawbreakers operate in public places in the city,
\nincluding shopping centers, railway stations and bus terminals.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Police shot to death a hoodlum in Kampung Rambutan
\nbus terminal. The hoodlum, identified as Roy Manulang, often
\nasked drivers and passengers for money.<\/p>\n
Massive crackdowns against hoodlums and street criminals were
\nconducted by police and troops following the killing of a police
\nofficer in the Blok M area shopping center last year.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people were arrested, but released after being
\ntaught military discipline and practical skills, in the hope that
\nthey could get a job for their future. Many of them have,
