Military solution to Aceh<\/p>\n

According to students in Aceh, a limited dialog between the
\nIndonesian government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is
\nimpossible in the province.<\/p>\n
GAM will continue its armed operation with civilians used as
\nshields, while the police and the military are provoked into
\nhaphazardly countering GAM's actions.<\/p>\n
The victims will be the innocent civilians. The people of Aceh
\nare the ones who suffer in this situation.<\/p>\n
It is not easy for the parties involved to escape from the
\nquandary that is Aceh. The people need a guarantee from the
\nmilitary and the police that they will be protected from attacks
\nby GAM. This would require a sophisticated territorial operation
\nsuch as the military operation conducted during the New Order
\nera.<\/p>\n
With the current weakened condition of military intelligence
\nand territorial operations, GAM has managed to intimidate the
\npeople of Aceh. To respond to GAM's guerrilla actions, the
\nmilitary and the police must have excellent knowledge of the
\nterritory. And they must teach the people to correctly identify
\nthe enemy.<\/p>\n
The Aceh administration, from the district to the provincial
\nlevel, is ambivalent, while the people are afraid of GAM. GAM has
\npsychologically overwhelmed all layers of society in Aceh: the
\nadministration, the people, the business community, intellectuals
\nand civil servants.<\/p>\n
It is not impossible that this situation will continue,
\nparticularly considering the people's increasing distrust of the
\ncentral government.<\/p>\n
There must be a special treatment for Aceh. A military
\noperation may be the best option, and we will pay for that.<\/p>\n
