Military probes Nipah incident<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The Brawijaya Military Command is currently
\ninvestigating six soldiers in connection with the shooting of
\nvillagers in Nipah on the Madura Island more than two years ago.<\/p>\n
The command's chief, Maj. Gen. Imam Utomo said that the six
\nmight be brought before the military court if there is sufficient
\nevidence of wrongdoing, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Although the military, which came under attack over the
\nincident, had already admitted that there was a violation of
\nprocedures by soldiers in the Nipah incident, no one has been
\nbrought to trial so far.<\/p>\n
"The investigation is continuing," Imam told reporters.<\/p>\n
Four Nipah villagers were killed when troops opened fire on
\ndemonstrators who were protesting at a government team to measure
\nland being appropriated for a reservoir. The land appropriation
\nproject has been canceled in the wake of the incident. (emb)<\/p>",
