Military police take over murder case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The man suspected of murdering and mutilating
\nhis own girlfriend, Air Force First Sgt. Uki Wardana, 24, was
\ntransferred to Jakarta Military Police Headquarters on Tuesday
\nnight, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The case is now being handled by the military police, East
\nJakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Syahrir Kuba told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Police have handed over the dossier on the case and will
\nshortly submit all the material evidence so far collected to the
\nmilitary, he added.<\/p>\n
Uki will be charged with premeditated murder under Article 340
\nof the Criminal Code which carries a minimum sentence of 20 years
\nin prison and a maximum penalty of death.<\/p>\n
In cooperation with the military police, East Jakarta police
\ndetectives have thoroughly examined Uki's background.<\/p>\n
\"We have checked and confirmed that he is an active member of
\nthe Air Force and that he was stationed at Halim Perdanakusuma
\nAir Force Base,\" Syahrir said.<\/p>\n
Preliminary investigations have lead police to believe that
\nUki was the sole participant in the murder. The suspect admitted
\nto killing Rahayu Chaeranti, alias Butet, 29, during
\ninterrogation, said.<\/p>\n
\"He claimed he cut up Rahayu's body (with a machete) to
\nobliterate her identity, but he panicked because he did not know
\nwhere to dispose of her head, feet and hands.\"<\/p>\n
Syahrir also reiterated that it was not necessary to conduct
\npsychiatric tests on the suspect.<\/p>\n
\"He is not insane. He was fully aware of what he was doing.
\nThe way he talked and explained things were very natural and
\nlogical, so I do not think it is necessary to conduct such a
\ntest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Uki admitted to the police that he had been planning to kill
\nhis girlfriend since July 21 because of her persistent requests
\nfor them to get married.<\/p>\n
The suspect also said that he had sex with the victim before
\nkilling her.<\/p>\n
Police so far have seized a walkie-talkie which the suspect
\nand his girlfriend used to communicate, the machete used in the
\nkilling, and the Vespa motorbike used to dump the body in East
\nJakarta on Saturday morning. (edt)<\/p>",
