Military Police plan to question Ghalib<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chief of Military Police Maj. Gen. Djasrie Marin
\nsaid on Saturday he would summon suspended Attorney General Andi
\nM. Ghalib in connection with a bribery allegation aimed against
\nhim.<\/p>\n
But Djasrie was quick to add that Ghalib's questioning would
\ntake place when there was enough evidence to do so. He said a
\nlack of evidence would enable a suspect to easily refute
\nallegations against him or her.<\/p>\n
The military police is seeking approval from the central bank
\nto investigate Ghalib's bank accounts, but the mandatory permit
\nhas so far not been issued yet. The latest request was made by
\nNational Police chief Gen. Roesmanhadi, according to Djasrie.<\/p>\n
President B.J. Habibie suspended Ghalib, an active lieutenant
\ngeneral, as attorney general early last week following reports
\nmade by the Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) that he allegedly
\ntook bribes from business tycoons Prayogo Pangestu and The Nin
\nKing. Ghalib insisted the money was a contribution to the
\nIndonesian Wrestling Association (PGSI) which he chairs.<\/p>\n
Ghalib, a target for criticism for his sluggish efforts in
\nprobing corruption allegations involving the former first family,
\nthe Soehartos, returned to service with the Indonesian Military
\n(TNI) following his suspension.<\/p>\n
Deputy attorney general Ismudjoko was installed as the acting
\nattorney general on Friday, only after furor stemmed from
\nHabibie's choice of Coordinating Minister for Political and
\nSecurity Affairs Gen. (ret) Feisal Tanjung for the vacant post.<\/p>\n
Djasrie said six of the nine witnesses in the case included
\nTaher, the PGSI treasurer, secretaries of both Prayogo and The
\nNin King, and The Nin King.<\/p>\n
In Ujungpandang, ICW executive Teten Masduki was forced to
\nspend Friday night at city police headquarters for security
\nreasons following threats of attack from a group of local people.<\/p>\n
Police put Teten under close watch since Teten arrived on
\nThursday morning until he left for home on Saturday. Teten was
\nthere to address a discussion on legal advocacy and corruption
\neradication.<\/p>\n
A throng of students led by an Association of Indonesian
\nMuslim Students (HMI) activist identified as Syawaluddin Rala,
\nbroke into the hotel where the discussion which featured Teten
\nwas being held on Friday evening.<\/p>\n
The angry students screamed while asking about the whereabouts
\nof Teten, who had already left the forum. The students accused
\nTeten of disgracing the Bugis tribe, to which Ghalib belongs.<\/p>\n
Teten said he anticipated a hostile reception from parts of
\nthe local community following his disclosure of Ghalib's alleged
\nbribe taking.<\/p>\n
\"I don't think the unfriendly treatment represents the
\nresponse of Bugis people to Ghalib's case. I'm here to clarify
\nthat we do not target Pak Ghalib because he is a Bugis but of his
\nposition as the attorney general. We will treat whoever holds the
