Military, police offices attacked in NTT<\/p>\n

Dozens of residents vandalized the offices of the Indonesian
\nMilitary (TNI) and police in two separate regencies in East Nusa
\nTenggara (NTT). No fatalities were reported but the buildings
\nwere severely damaged.<\/p>\n
The attack on Miofao Military Command in North Central Timor
\noccurred on Tuesday afternoon, after a fight broke out between
\nlocal military officers and spectators at a soccer game held to
\ncommemorate Independence Day.<\/p>\n
The game, held in a field in West Miofao district, had
\nproceeded smoothly at first. However, the officer who was hired
\nto safeguard the event, had resorted to violence when spectators
\nrefused to step back behind the sidelines. Some spectators were
\ninjured after being kicked or hit with his baton.<\/p>\n
The crowd retaliated and began to solicit support from others
\nto fight the officer, who ran into the nearby military command.<\/p>\n
The spectators chased him to the building, which they set
\nabout to destroy, shattering the windows and breaking down the
\ndoors.<\/p>\n
Military and local leaders managed to restore order and
\noffered to facilitate negotiations between the military and
\nresidents.<\/p>\n
Chief of the North Central Timor Military Command overseeing
\nWest Miofao district Lt. Col. Bambang S said on Thursday that the
\ndispute had been settled.<\/p>\n
Two days earlier, dozens of people vandalized the Jerebu'u
\nPolice station in Ngada here, following the alleged assault of a
\nlocal resident by a police officer.<\/p>\n
The assault reportedly occurred during a soccer game held
\nearlier on Saturday, also to commemorate Independence Day.<\/p>\n
Contacted by The Jakarta Post on Thursday, chief of the East
\nNusa Tenggara police Brig. Gen. Edward Aritonang said that the
\nsituation in Jerebu'u had returned to normal.<\/p>",
