Military personnel questioned on Monday over 1996 PDI attack<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A joint military-police team assigned to
\ninvestigate the July 27, 1996 attack on the PDI headquarters will
\nstart questioning on Monday military personnel about their
\npossible roles in the violent crime, police and military officers
\nsaid on Friday.<\/p>\n
Sr. Supt. Makbul Padmanegara, a police member of the team,
\nrefused to identify the military personnel to be quizzed, but
\nsaid that they would include both low and top-ranking officers.<\/p>\n
Next week's questioning will be based on the results of the
\nNational Police final investigation, Makbul said.<\/p>\n
A reliable source at the National Military Police Headquarters
\n(Puspom TNI), who is also a member of the joint investigation
\nteam, identified five of the military officers to be grilled next
\nweek as Col. Haryanto, Lt. Col. Erwin, Lt. Col. Leonard, Maj. Adi
\nand Capt. Purwo.<\/p>\n
He, however, did not give details of the officer's positions
\nat the time but said that Haryanto was a member of the city
\nmilitary command's intelligence unit.<\/p>\n
The team, according to Makbul, has already questioned some 30
\nto 40 civilians as witnesses in the case.<\/p>\n
\"They were some of the people believed to be at the spot when
\nthe attack took place. The others include members of the youth
\norganization Pemuda Pancasila,\" Makbul explained.<\/p>\n
Makbul, also the National Police deputy chief of detectives
\nfor general crimes, said Fatimah Achmad, former executive of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party (PDI) under Soerjadi, was among the
\ncivilian witnesses.<\/p>\n
A group of supporters of the PDI's splinter faction,
\nreportedly backed by the elements of the former Indonesian Armed
\nForces (ABRI), raided and took over the party headquarters from
\nthe supporters of toppled PDI leader Megawati Soekarnoputri, now
\nthe country's Vice President.<\/p>\n
The senior officer refused to disclose the number of civilians
\nalready quizzed by the joint team.<\/p>\n
\"The number of witnesses will grow in line with the
\ninvestigation's progress,\" he said.<\/p>\n
There has been no security personnel declared as suspects,
\nfollowing the completion of the police investigation of the
\nattack, even though the police investigators also questioned
\nseveral (former) military generals.<\/p>\n
The May results named 11 suspects in the PDI attack, all of
\nwhom are civilians.<\/p>\n
Last month, the military and the police formed the team to
\ndetermine any possible involvement of military personnel in the
\nviolation.<\/p>\n
The July 1996 unrest, according to the official record, left
\nfive people dead and 23 others missing, but many believed the
