Military officers ordered to jump into security mode<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Wiranto
\nordered yesterday local military officers not to wait for a
\ncommand from their superiors in tackling security problem and
\ndisturbance in their territories.<\/p>\n
\"I hope any problem and disturbance can be handled by local
\nofficers as soon as possible, without waiting for orders from
\ntheir superiors,\" Wiranto said in his speech at a ceremony for
\nthe induction of the new South Jakarta Military District chief.<\/p>\n
At the ceremony Wiranto installed Lt. Col. Yudo Lelono as the
\nnew chief of the South Jakarta Military District, replacing Lt.
\nCol. Priyo Handoko.<\/p>\n
Initiative from officers, in settling security problems, is
\nbadly needed to help make the capital a clean, lively and safe
\ncity, he said.<\/p>\n
Lelono, a graduate of the National Military Academy, is a
\nformer chief of the War Training Center of the City Military,
\nwhile Handoko, a graduate of the same academy, will be promoted
\nas an official of the territorial assistant department of the
\nArmed Forces.<\/p>\n
Wiranto asked the new officer to increase professionalism and
\nimprove sensitivity for any indication of security disturbance.
\n\"Keep an eye on troubled areas, in connection with aspects of
\ngeography and demography, as well as the social condition,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also urged his officers to anticipate both the positive and
\nnegative potentials of any area, which can also affect security.<\/p>\n
The commander warned that the current national development
\nwill also bring about some negative impacts, particularly
\nconcerning security. The fast growing South Jakarta area, he
\nsaid, will also face the same thing.<\/p>\n
Acknowledging the rising trend in crime, Wiranto again ordered
\nhis personnel to help the police in maintaining security in the
\ncity.<\/p>\n
\"I see that criminals are becoming increasingly sadistic. Help
\nthe police in their fight against crooks,\" he said. (29)<\/p>",
