Military is just a part of Indonesia's management system<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): The Indonesian military (TNI) is no longer
\nresponsible for all of the country's problems as the TNI is now
\njust a part of the state's management system, says TNI chief
\nAdmiral Widodo.<\/p>\n
In a written address marking the opening of the regular seven-
\nmonth course at the military staff and command school (Sesko) in
\nBandung on Friday, Widodo said that all components of the nation
\nwere responsible for what was happening in the country, so they
\nshould set the resolution of the nation's problems as their first
\npriority.<\/p>\n
Widodo's address was read by the head of the military staff
\nand command school Lt. Gen. Djadja Suparman.<\/p>\n
According to the admiral, the country was facing a myriad of
\nproblems resulting from the rapid changes that had taken place in
\nall walks of life. \"The reform movement has increased freedom and
\nthis contributes to a more democratic life. On the other hand,
\ncertain groups of people have been exploiting the freedom for
\ntheir own ends.\"<\/p>\n
He cited the continuing conflicts in several parts of the
\ncountry as evidence of the fanaticism possessed by the members of
\nthese groups.<\/p>\n
The military has been the target of criticism for its failure
\nto deal with a series of sectarian and ethnic conflicts,
\nincluding the recent mayhem in Sampit, Central Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
\"All of us must deal with the conflicts properly. Letting the
\nconflicts go unresolved will only increase unhealthy fanaticism
\nand threaten the existence of our country,\" said Widodo.<\/p>\n
Widodo also expressed his hope that military educational
\ninstitutions, including Sesko, would use national issues as
\nmaterial for their studies. \"The analyses conducted and the
\nresults of the studies could be used to formulate steps to
\novercome the problems.\"<\/p>\n
After the ceremony, Djadja told reporters that Sesko had
\nchanged its curriculum. \"The new curriculum focuses on defense
\nand analyzing developments in social life. But the main task of
\nthe military is defense and security.\"<\/p>\n
Djadja, former chief of the Army's Strategic Reserves Command
\n(Kostrad), said that he planned to give the opportunity to
\ncivilians with post-graduate diplomas to participate in Sesko's
\nregular courses. \"Many people, including military observers
\n(mostly civilians), analyze military affairs in a very, very
\nshallow way. How can one speak about the military if one has no
\nknowledge about the military.\"<\/p>\n
He said he wanted a regulation instituted requiring military
