        "content": "<p>Military guarantees election security in Aceh<\/p>\n<p>Teuku Agam Muzakir, The Jakarta Post, Lhokseumawe, Aceh<\/p>\n<p>The martial law administration in Aceh will deploy all of its<br>\nforces to ensure the upcoming general election will be a success<br>\nin the province, a military official said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Expressing his optimism for successful elections to thousands<br>\nof civilian guards who will help maintain security during the<br>\npolls here, martial law administrator Maj. Gen. Endang Suwarya<br>\nsaid he was prepared with a strategy to enhance security<br>\nthroughout the elections in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\"Besides some 40,000 security personnel tasked to hunt for<br>\nrebels, we are ready with about 60,000 civilians assigned to<br>\nprovide protection for voters, election organizers and polling<br>\nstations,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Endang, a former chief of the Banda Aceh military district,<br>\nalso expressed his pride in the progress made by the province<br>\nsince the imposition of martial law last May.<\/p>\n<p>He said an increasing number of Acehnese residents had<br>\nregistered to serve as civilian guards during the elections, an<br>\nindication the situation in the province was gradually returning<br>\nto normal.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the 1999 elections, residents did not want to become<br>\ncivilian guards. Now the number of registrants is increasing,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Endang conceded that despite military operations in Aceh<br>\nentering their ninth month, the situation in certain areas of the<br>\nprovince known as traditional strongholds of the Free Aceh<br>\nMovement (GAM) remained unstable and prone to security<br>\ndisturbances.<\/p>\n<p>Observers have expressed skepticism about the ability to hold<br>\ndemocratic elections during martial law, saying the polls would<br>\nrun smoothly but voters could face physical and psychological<br>\npressure from security and paramilitary personnel.<\/p>",
