Military detains five 'communists'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Java military command announced that
\nit has arrested five \"communists\" who allegedly have been active
\nunderground, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Yusuf Kartanegara, the chief of the Diponegoro
\nCommand, said in Semarang that recent underground activities to
\nestablish an Islamic state in Indonesia were engineered by the
\nfive.<\/p>\n
He did not disclose their identities but said they had
\npreviously served jail terms of between 10 and 20 years for their
\nlinks with the now outlawed Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).<\/p>\n
\"It just goes to prove that to this day, the supporters of
\nthis outlawed party are still around,\" Yusuf was quoted as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
His announcement came only a day after Armed Forces Chief Gen.
\nFeisal Tanjung issued a public warning that remnants of PKI are
\nactive again in their efforts to disrupt national stability.<\/p>\n
Yusuf said the five people were arrested recently in
\nPurwokerto. They were together in one car and the authorities
\nfound documents detailing their activities.<\/p>\n
He said that the \"PKI network, hidden behind the Islamic state
\nveil\", in Central Java has now extended to Purwokerto, Boyolali,
\nKartosuro, Pekalongan and Tegal. They are preying on people with
\nscant religious knowledge, he added.<\/p>\n
Asked whether the recent fire at the Central Java
\nAdministration's Office of Socio-Political Affairs, which
\ndestroyed all of its files about former political detainees
\nlinked with the PKI, could have been the work of former
\ncommunists, Yusuf said the authorities are still investigating.<\/p>\n
He said, however, that the authorities have copies of the
\ndocuments at other agencies. \"We haven't lost the files.\"<\/p>\n
There are an estimated 300,000 former political detainees
\nliving in Central Java, according to the last official count.
