        "content": "<p>Military braces for massive layoffs<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA (JP): The East Java military is bracing itself for<br>\nlarge scale demonstrations in anticipation of the expected 6,000<br>\nlayoffs likely to occur in January.<\/p>\n<p>Maj. Gen. Djaja Suparman, commander of the Brawijaya Military<br>\nCommand in East Java, lamented yesterday the fact that the<br>\nlayoffs would take place so close to the New Year, the end of the<br>\nMoslem fasting month Idul Fitri and Chinese New Year.<\/p>\n<p>\"To be honest, I don't want to take any risks in maintaining<br>\nsecurity in East Java, especially with the People's Consultative<br>\nAssembly plenary session coming up,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Spending is usually at an annual high during the Idul Fitri<br>\nholiday as workers are accustomed to receiving a bonus.<\/p>\n<p>Djaja said that the Armed Forces would cooperate with related<br>\ninstitutions such as the All-Indonesia Workers Union Federation,<br>\ncompany owners and the Ministry of Manpower to settle workers'<br>\nproblems which might arise.<\/p>\n<p>He said problems should be settled according to legal<br>\nprocedures.<\/p>\n<p>\"We won't wait until the workers lose their confidence in the<br>\nlaw and its legal institutions,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Surabaya branch of the Legal Aid Institute has also set up<br>\na special post to receive complaints from disgruntled<br>\nworkers who face dismissal.<\/p>\n<p>Pungky Indarti, head of the Legal Aid Institute's worker's<br>\ndivision, predicted that more than 10,000 workers would face<br>\ndismissal next year.<\/p>\n<p>She said that this year alone, more than 7,000 workers from 20<br>\ncompanies in East Java had already been dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>A source from the local All-Indonesian Workers Union<br>\nFederation who requested anonymity said that the federation would<br>\ntake steps to limit the number of layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>The source did not say what steps the union would take.<br>\n(nur\/09)<\/p>",
