Migrant workers 'not terrorists'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Fahmi Idris
\ncame out in defense of Indonesians working overseas on Thursday,
\ntelling the police the workers were not terrorists but
\nhardworking people eager to help their families.<\/p>\n
\"It is rash to suspect that all Indonesians employed overseas
\nare terrorists. I would absolutely oppose any plans by the police
\nto raid workers leaving for overseas or returning home. All sides
\nshould remember that they go abroad to find jobs to help their
\nfamilies, not to help terrorists,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Fahmi was responding to news that the police planned to
\nmonitor workers going abroad and returning home, following
\nreports that an Indonesian worker in Saudi Arabia was acting as a
\ncourier to deliver funds to finance terrorists in the southern
\nPhilippines.<\/p>\n
Fahmi said he would not object if the police took harsh
\naction against any overseas workers found guilty of involvement
\nin terrorism, but said the authorities had to avoid treating all
\nmigrant workers as terror suspects.<\/p>\n
Separately, the director general of overseas labor placement
\nat the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, I Gusti Made
\nArka, said the Indonesian worker acting as a suspected courier
\nfor terrorists had entered Saudi Arabia illegally to work there.
