Migrant workers held in house<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Local police and the city manpower office have
\nnot taken any action against the holding of 253 female workers
\ndestined for overseas employment arranged by a local company.<\/p>\n
The company, PT RCI, locked up the would-be migrant workers in
\nthe Bukit Golf housing complex, Sungai Panas, before local people
\nand activists from Nahdlatul Ulama youth wing Anshor finally
\ndiscovered their nine-month confinement and released them by
\nbreaking in last week, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Some of the young women said they had not been allowed to go
\nout and communicate with relatives while others had been
\nphysically abused, with only meager amounts of food being given
\nto them.<\/p>\n
They became stranded in Batam after responding to newspaper
\nadvertisements which promised them employment in Malaysia and
\nSingapore as housemaids for a monthly salary of Rp 1.1 million.<\/p>\n
Police, meanwhile, have questioned eight people but no
\nsuspects have been arrested for further investigation.<\/p>",
