Mien decries TV series as sexist<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State Minister of Women's Roles Mien Sugandhi
\nhas poured cold water on the highly popular, locally-made
\ntelevision programs known as sinetron, condemning them as sexist.<\/p>\n
\"I truly despise all the sinetron because they have no quality
\nwhatsoever and they degrade the roles of women,\" Mien was quoted
\nas saying by the Antara news agency yesterday when she launched a
\nPancasila guidance course for about 100 participants.<\/p>\n
She singled out Bella Vista and Untukmu Segalanya as being the
\nworst offenders against women's integrity. \"One of these portrays
\na paralyzed women being bullied as if she was an animal.\"<\/p>\n
Locally-made television drama series have been growing in
\npopularity and many of them are now screened during the evening
\npeak hours of the commercial networks.<\/p>\n
The sinetron programs are widely touted as Indonesia's answer
\nto redress the dominance of action-filled American programs and
\nLatin soap operas, all equally criticized because they do not
\nreflect local culture and values.<\/p>\n
With the local film industry in a state of decay, Indonesian
\nsilver screen producers, actors and actresses have turned their
\nattention and resources on the growing sinetron industry.<\/p>\n
But Mien is not impressed, as was apparent from her remarks
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Women in sinetron programs are treated as \"dead commodities\",
\nare always in the wrong and always the source of problems in
\nsociety, she said.<\/p>\n
Actresses should have some principles and refuse to play roles
\nthat denigrate women's roles, she said. \"They should read the
\nscript first, and should not accept the role offered simply
\nbecause of high pay.\"<\/p>\n
Mien said she had relayed her concern at a recent meeting with
\na group of performers, including television actors and actresses,
\nwho belong to Golkar, the ruling political group. (emb)<\/p>",
