Microsoft signs agreement with PC manufacturers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Microsoft, a leading United States software
\ncompany, signed up four Indonesian computer manufactures
\nyesterday to preinstall its software in their computers for
\ndomestic distribution.<\/p>\n
The agreement, signed at the Grand Hyatt hotel here, was
\nwitnessed by American Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy and the
\ndirector general of metal, machinery and chemical industries,
\nEffendi Sudarsono.<\/p>\n
Joachim Kempin, Microsoft's senior vice president for original
\nequipment sales, and John Lauer, Microsoft's director for
\nSoutheast Asia, said the agreement would increase business
\nopportunities for Indonesian-based personal computer
\nmanufacturers, and would help combat piracy of intellectual
\nrights.<\/p>\n
\"I am encouraged by the strong show of support by these four
\nstrategic companies for their vision and foresight in getting on
\nboard with a global information technology market that puts
\nproper emphasis on protection of software intellectual property,\"
\nKempin said.<\/p>\n
The four Indonesian-based computer makers that signed the
\nagreement are PT Multicom Persada International which produces of
\nMugen computers, Galva Technologies Corporation which produces
\nGTC computers, PT Zeuscom Indonesia which makes Kronus and
\nZeuscom computers, and PT Zyrexindo Mandiri Buana which produces
\nZyrex computers.<\/p>\n
Genuine Windows 95 software will be installed in the computers
\nmanufactured by the four companies before they are sold.<\/p>\n
Sudarsono said the government would encourage the development
\nof the computer industry by lowering or eliminating tariffs on
\ncomputers and computer-related products.<\/p>\n
He praised the agreement as a measure to combat piracy. The
\ngovernment has introduced laws to protect intellectual property
\nrights, but policing the laws has proved almost impossible.<\/p>\n
Kempin told The Jakarta Post that anyone buying the computers
\nmade by the four companies would get a Windows 95 manual in
\nIndonesian.<\/p>\n
Microsoft will give the four computer manufacturers technical
\nassistance to make their computers suitable for Windows 95.
\nMicrosoft will also certify their products and promote them
\nthrough seminars.<\/p>\n
Kempin would not say how much the companies were paying for
\nMicrosoft's software. He said the price was such that the
\ncompanies would \"still be competitive against international
\nbrands\".<\/p>\n
The four companies computers are about 15 percent cheaper than
\nbranded computers, he said.<\/p>\n
There are hundreds of computer makers in Indonesia, but many
\nof them use pirated software to compete against branded
\ncomputers.<\/p>\n
Between 400,000 and 500,000 computers are sold in Indonesia
\neach year. More than 50 percent of these are made by domestic
\nmanufacturers, said Oki Widjaja, president of PT Galva
