Microsoft sets alliance with Indonesia's Indosat<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned PT Indosat telecommunications
\ncompany has set up a strategic alliance with multi-billion-dollar
\nU.S. software company Microsoft to provide Indonesia Interactive,
\na new interactive Internet service.<\/p>\n
Indosat's project manager for product development, Susilo Dwi
\nWiyanto, said here yesterday that Indonesia Interactive,
\nnicknamed i2, would be launched tomorrow.<\/p>\n
\"In the alliance, Indosat is using Microsoft Commercial
\nInternet System (MCIS) in Indosatnet,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indosatnet, the Indosat's Internet service was launched in
\nApril 1996.<\/p>\n
Wiyanto said i2 would feature news, business information,
\nstock quotes, tour and travel information, entertainment, news
\nand chat-lines, net meetings and movie previews.<\/p>\n
\"The most important thing is that MCIS will allow Internet
\nusers to set personalization. This service allows users to choose
\nselected subjects based on their interests,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the Microsoft software would also search the web for
\nInternet users.<\/p>\n
\"The system will also offer online dealings or E-Commerce,\" he
\nsaid, adding that Citibank was committed to supporting the
\nservice.<\/p>\n
A number of companies supported the new service, he said.
\n\"Among them are the Jakarta Stock Exchange, Prambors radio,
\nSarinah department store, Berca computer store, and 20th Century
\nFox.\"<\/p>\n
Wiyanto said Indosat and Microsoft had not formed a vendor-
\nbuyer relationship. \"This is an alliance in which each party can
\npromote each other.\"<\/p>\n
Microsoft's group manager for public network sales in
\nSoutheast Asia, Chong Yoke Sim, said her company was glad Indosat
\nwas applying Microsoft technology.<\/p>\n
\"This is Microsoft's first alliance with Indonesia,\" she said,
\nadding that the company would work closely with Indosat.<\/p>\n
She said that under the alliance, Indosat and Microsoft agreed
\nto arrange a series of cooperation programs including joint
\nmarketing and human resources development.<\/p>\n
\"In the future project will be multimedia via satellite in the
\nbroadband area,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Microsoft has established several other alliances with
\nSoutheast Asian countries including Thailand, Singapore and
\nMalaysia.<\/p>\n
The company, headed by Bill Gates, will participate in
\nMultimedia Super Corridor, a huge multimedia project in Malaysia.
