Microsoft enjoys rising demand for software<\/p>\n

PT Microsoft Indonesia is seeing a rising demand for its software
\nproducts following the implementation of the country's law on
\nintellectual property rights.<\/p>\n
\"Our partners have been busy meeting demands from end users
\nfor original Microsoft software,\" Microsoft Indonesia marketing
\ncommunications executive Cynthia Iskandar told The Jakarta Post
\nlast week.<\/p>\n
But the company will not revise its sales target for this
\nyear. For the 2003\/2004 fiscal year, which started in July, the
\ncompany projected sales to increase by 10 percent. This
\nprojection did not take into account the positive impact of the
\nlaw on intellectual property rights, which was implemented on
\nJuly 29.<\/p>\n
Reports have shown that 89 percent of software products used
\nin Indonesia are pirated. But since July 29 more individuals and
\ncompanies have started to use genuine software products.<\/p>\n
Book store operator PT Gunung Agung, for example, has planned
\nto purchase licensed software products for all computers at its
\nheadquarters and in more than 30 bookstores across the country.<\/p>\n
\"We estimate the licensed-software will cost us at least Rp 1
\nbillion (US$120,482),\" Yudo Adiwibowo, the company's information
\nand technology officer told the Post.<\/p>\n
He said that the decision to buy Microsoft products came after
\na sales officer from Microsoft Indonesia offered the company a
\n\"software consultation\" prior to the implementation of the law.<\/p>\n
Microsoft's business development manager Diana Soedardi told
\nthe Post that her company also provided a service for existing
\nand potential customers to manage the software.<\/p>\n
\"The program is called the Microsoft Software Asset Management
\nProgram, and it is free,\" she said. \"Currently we use a software
\ninventory program called SAMLite2.0 to run the program.<\/p>\n
She said that in July, as many as 90 customers asked for
\nSAMLite2.0 deployment.<\/p>\n
Microsoft also offers various financing schemes.<\/p>\n
\"For education institutions, we offer a 10 percent to 20
\npercent discount,\" said Diana.<\/p>\n
Many other companies, however, are turning to the cheaper
\nLinux system.<\/p>",
