A promotion session for the 2026 ASEAN-China Micro-Short Drama\nContest was successfully held in Beijing on Friday (17\/7). The contest\nis part of the eighth ASEAN-China Media Week, organised by China\u2019s\nNational Radio and Television Administration, the Guangxi Zhuang\nAutonomous Region government, and Brunei authorities. It aims to build a\nChina-ASEAN cooperation platform in the micro-short drama sector,\nachieving mutually beneficial results in cross-border cultural\ninnovation.<\/p>\n
Wei Dangjun, vice chairman of the China Netcasting Services\nAssociation, stated in a speech that micro-short dramas have emerged as\nan innovative outcome of digital netcasting and a new channel for\ncross-border cultural exchange. He expressed hope that participants\nwould submit outstanding micro-short drama works, making them an\nimportant bridge to deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two\nsides.<\/p>\n
Under the theme \u2018AI Empowerment, Co-Creation and Shared Future\u2019, the\ncontest accepts micro-short drama works and original scripts related to\nmutually beneficial China-ASEAN cooperation, tourism, youth and\npeople-to-people exchanges, and AI innovation. A number of works and\nscripts are currently being submitted to the committee, with judging\nresults expected to be announced in October, followed by a launch and\npromotion conference for the competition\u2019s outcomes.<\/p>\n
In recent years, Guangxi has utilised its geographical advantages and\nclose ties with ASEAN to transform itself into a hub for the expansion\nof micro-short dramas into the region. It relies on its own\ninternational distribution platform and mainstream streaming platforms\noutside China as crucial methods to achieve the export of Chinese\ndramas. Furthermore, Guangxi continues to develop a co-production model\nof \u2018developed in Guangxi, filmed in ASEAN countries, and distributed\njointly\u2019, consistently producing cross-border co-productions between\nChina and Thailand, as well as China and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
Zhou Shuya, an associate researcher at the China National Radio and\nTelevision Administration Research Centre, explained that ASEAN had\nbecome the region with the largest download volume for Chinese\nmicro-short dramas outside China in 2025, exceeding 400 million times\nand accounting for approximately 27 per cent of total overseas\ndownloads. Zhou added that in the first half of 2026, Thailand,\nIndonesia, and several other Southeast Asian countries continued to be\nthe main markets for Chinese micro-short dramas.
