Micro entrepreneurs given recognition<\/p>\n

Nine entrepreneurs were named on Thursday as recipients of the
\nGlobal Micro-entrepreneurs Awards 2005 from the University of
\nIndonesia's School of Economics' UKM Center, the United Nations
\nDevelopment Program (UNDP) and Citigroup.<\/p>\n
Komariah, a housewife from Purwakarta, West Java, who owns a
\ndried-fish processing business, was named as one of the three
\nwinners of the award's category for micro-entrepreneurs with
\nassets of less than Rp 5 million (some US$500).<\/p>\n
Other awardees in the category were Rosidah, also from
\nPurwakarta, and Siti Murtinah from Nias, North Sumatra. They both
\nown businesses making traditional snacks.<\/p>\n
All nine winners were selected from 24 finalists in the three
\ncategories, who were themselves shortlisted from 402 candidates
\nacross the archipelago.<\/p>\n
They were chosen according to their ability to sustain their
\nbusinesses through microcredit programs, the value-added factor
\nof their products, the social impacts of their businesses, such
\nas how it had created jobs, as well as their entrepreneurship
\ninitiative.<\/p>\n
The selection process involved seven judges chosen from Bank
\nIndonesia, educators, the business community and the media.<\/p>\n
UKM Center head Nining I. Susilo said she hoped that the
\nawards would encourage both micro-entrepreneurs and creditors to
\ndevelop small businesses while participating in microcredit
\ncooperatives, thus spurring the country's economy.<\/p>\n
\"Small businesses, if managed properly, can help the local
\neconomy. However small, they will always bring contributions for
\nthemselves, their families and the local community,\" she
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
The award for the category of micro-entrepreneurs with total
\nassets of between Rp 5 million and Rp 50 million went to Suwardi,
\na freshwater fish farmer from Tulung Agung, East Java.<\/p>\n
Also receiving the award, were Hasan Hidayat, a handwoven
\ntextile vendor from Pekalongan, Central Java, and Desak Ketut
\nRai, a traditional snack producer from Gianyar, Bali.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Abdul Rochim from Cilegon, West Java, who makes
\ninnovative traditional snacks from cassava (singkong), received
\nthe award for micro-entrepreneurs with assets of more than Rp 50
\nmillion, along with Joko Widianto, a dairy product businessman
\nfrom Bandung, and Henny Hasyim, an embroiderer from Sidoarjo,
\nEast Java.<\/p>\n
Each winner will receive prizes of Rp 100 million and further
\nentrepreneurship guidance from the UKM Center, while the
\ncreditors who nominated them will receive acknowledgements for
\ntheir roles in the microcredit programs.<\/p>\n
Last year, Titik Winarti, a housewife and handicraft
\nentrepreneur from Surabaya was named Indonesia's representative
\nto receive a Microcredit Award from the UN.<\/p>",
