The network is\nknown to have used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to target\naudiences in the United States through content related to American\npolitics.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the latest threat report released by Meta, the company took\naction against four Facebook accounts and 31 Instagram accounts linked\nto actors in Iran. The operation drew attention because it managed to\ngather thousands of followers by posing as ordinary Americans in order\nto boost the authenticity of their content.<\/p>\n<p>Meta revealed that the network\u2019s operators shared memes and messages\nexpressing anti-Republican views as well as narratives concerning the\nIsrael-Palestine conflict and immigration issues. The use of AI was\nfound in the creation of some of the content, including memes\ndistributed on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>A Meta spokesperson stated that information about the operation was\nshared with law enforcement authorities in the United States for\nfollow-up.<\/p>\n<p>In running their campaign, the operators posed as individuals based\nin the US, such as activists, students and graphic designers. They\nclaimed to live in major cities such as Washington DC, San Diego and\nAtlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Meta confirmed that none of the collaboration attempts succeeded.\nInternal data showed around 79,400 accounts followed one or more of the\ninauthentic meme accounts on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Meta estimated the campaign\u2019s reach was at a moderate level, with\nmeaningful but limited engagement. Although the tactics used were not\nentirely new, the number of followers and the breadth of interaction\nwithin the network served as an important note for the company.<\/p>\n<p>AI-generated content has now become a routine part of online\ninfluence operations. Meta stated that AI technology has been found in\nnearly every influence network it has dismantled recently. As a\nprecautionary measure, Meta continues to invest in AI technology to\ndetect inauthentic account behaviour more quickly and accurately.<\/p>",
